Ice cream review: Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Ice cream review by John
Score: 3.5 out of 5 scoops
Company: Ben & Jerry's

This is one of the finest cookie dough ice creams around, but I still found it somewhat lacking. The ice cream part, here a vanilla, is quite creamy and smooth and full of flavor, as are nearly all Ben & Jerry's products. There are little bits of chocolate pieces throughout, almost more like a chocolate chip ice cream than a cookie dough ice cream. And then there are, of course, the expected chunks of cookie dough, here looking and tasting like chocolate chip cookie dough.

All of that sounds great, right?

Well, it is good, I'll give it that. But great? Not quite. I found this to be a somewhat bland ice cream from Ben & Jerry's. Perhaps it's because this flavor is one of the older flavors from the company, and the more modern Ben & Jerry's flavors tend to have so many more gobs of goodness to them, and richness and variety and complexity.

Please do not misunderstand. This is a quality ice cream. But it feels like something is missing. Maybe some nuts or some chocolate syrup or a caramel swirl ... something. As is, I found it just a notch above plain.

If you search for this ice cream in the stores, it is labeled "Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough" in the pint and quart sizes, but it's simply called "Cookie Dough" in the single serve, 3.6 ounces size.

Bonus trivia: Did you know Ben & Jerry's created the very first chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream?

  1. "one of the finest cookie dough ice creams around" yet you give it 3.5 stars? Seriously dude. This is a 5 star ice cream. No way around it. One of the all time best.
